Review: Bata-waf

We got this new math game called  Bata-waf  which is made by Djeco. This game comes with 36 cards. Each one has a character on it and the numbers 1 through 6 listed on the left side. At first look I thought that this was a simple game for small children to just say how tall the characters were but it is actually the game of war made for kids ages 3 to 6. This is a 2 person game. The designs on the cards are very simple and some of the characters look quite comical. The colors used are very easy on the eyes since they are nice neutral colors. What I like is that not all the same number cards have the same character on them which makes the cards very interesting. The numbers on the cards are very easy to see and they are written very neatly so that children will recognize them. Even if your child does not have a firm grasps on numbers this game could grow with them. You could use it to start out with learning numbers or help them with recognizing a few letters at a time. This is...

Review: Mobi Kids

Mobi Kids I found similar to Bananagrams but for numbers. And just like with Bananagrams, Mobi Kids can be used for more than just playing the main game. The game itself is played with 2 players or 2 teams. You split the game pieces; green for one team and blue for the second team. The white pieces are shared and have addition, subtraction and equal signs. While the green and blue pieces have numbers on them. You are meant to use all of your pieces (green or blue) by making math equations. The 1st team to correctly use all of their pieces wins the game. We have played with Mobi Kids like the manual says but also for other things. I have had our daughter practice both making numbers and reading them. The pieces are also useful for making equations. I like to make sure that our daughter understands how to find the answers to math problems as well as forming the problems herself. I can either tell her a problem to make or make up a word problem. Doing these extra ideas and playing the ga...

Review: Mathematical Reasoning A

For kindergarten I decided to get Mathematical Reasoning Beginnings 1  and 2  just to have as extra practice for our daughter. Mathematical Reasoning A  is more for a kindergartener so I use it as more of a confidence builder since our daughter knows everything in the book. Some reasons I like Mathematical Reasoning are because it is colorful, bright, fun and our daughter has really enjoyed doing the math work in it. I decided to keep it in a binder (2 inch) along with Mathematical Reasoning B . I tore out the perforated pages and hole punched them. We use a sheet protector so that we can reuse the pages for more practice and then I can use them for our second child when she’s old enough.  The booklet starts off very simple with shapes, numbers and colors. I do like that it goes over even and odd because some of the other math books skip this. It also goes over 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc which I find very important because your student will need to understand this for ...

Tips & Tricks: Making Math Fun

I love math! It was always my favorite subject in school. Sadly, our daughter does not share my love of math. She will shutdown completely and not even try, even though she is amazing at it. So I have to make math fun so she’ll want to do it. We got this monkey scale a long time ago. I used it at first to show her visually what is bigger/smaller, heavier/lighter, many/few. It worked great and was super fun for her. Since she enjoyed this balance so much I’m incorporating it into our Math-U-See curriculum . She has the physical blocks and the balance to solidify her math knowledge. But the most important part is that she is finding math can be fun. If you teach at a school or at home you know it’s important for the student to enjoy school. For learning to count by a certain number I’ve got another idea. I draw on the driveway a bunch of squares and then write the numbers; example 10, 20, 30, etc. Then your child gets to jump on each number. Not only will they have fun while learni...

Review: Math-U-See Primer

Math was always my favorite subject in cool; well until I took chemistry. I use Timberdoodle curriculum and they had a placement test for math. Even though our daughter placed for Alpha, in their 1st grade kit, I choose to stick with  Math-U-See Primer . My reason for this is because I wanted to give her the extra confidence of know things and getting answers right. What I love is that this curriculum comes with the student booklet, teacher manual, instructional DVD and block manipulatives. A really nice thing is in the blocks there is a huge poster for teaching place values and how to read a clock. The booklet is in black and white but offers a lot of coloring for the student. The book says to color the squares the same color as the blocks; eg: 5 is light blue so then when they show 5 squares together you’re supposed to color them light blue. Now I don’t have my daughter do this. I let her color the squares whatever color she wants because I don’t want her thinkin...

Review: Mathematical Reasoning

I love math and wanted our daughter to gain the same passion for it I have. Mathematical Reasoning  Beginning 1  and  Beginning 2  have been an amazing curriculum for early math. Beginning 2 came with our Timberdoodle PreK Elite Kit and was a hit right off the bat. Our daughter loves the bright and colorful pages. She was doing so well with this book I went ahead and got Beginning 1 because I figured always getting the answers right would help build confidence and it did. The books get increasingly more challenging but then go back to an easier concept which is great reviewing and not getting burnt out. I love that they include riddles, number writing practice, drawing shapes and a ton more. However, I do wish they talked more shapes and colors. I’ve taught dark/light colors and a ton of shapes but we’re over halfway down with the book and it has only gone over triangle, square and rectangle.
