Review: Primary Science Kit by Learning Resources

This science kit is really cute! The perfect size for little hands and very well made. The 10 experiments do require items not given in the kit to complete but for the most part they are household items you probably already have. The googles are really cute and the part that goes over your ears is adjustable. However, my daughter is small for her age so the googles are way to big for her. In fact, they actually fit me.

She’s had a ton of fun with this kit and doesn’t  want to stop using it. You get a flask and stopper with the kit but none of the experiments call for it. The test tubes have lids and holders which is great your little beginner scientists. I love that it has a funnel for when you pour stuff from the beaker; helps keeps the mess down. I didn’t like that the eye dropper doesn’t come apart. I can never get it fully dry  and imagine mold with eventually form as a result. Definitely, would recommend this kit to anyone though.

Review: Peek-a-Boo-Bunny by Smart Games

My sister was nice enough to get my daughter the Peek-a-Boo-Bunny by Smart Games. She bought it off of my Timberdoodle wishlist. The reason I wanted it for her was because she has never had a game where she has to make something based off a picture. Since she’ll be starting on Timberdoodle pre-K kit it was something that she wouldn’t get.

I really like this game. The pieces are big and sturdy for a toddler to easily handle. The cards are sturdy but I still wouldn’t trust my daughter to use them without tearing them. They have 4 levels of difficulty. And they include a booklet of the cards in the event you lose a card. I did have trouble opening the box, and the box is huge, so I am storing the pieces in a ziplock bag which works out better for travel purposes. I plan on using this for both preschool and prek.

My daughter really enjoyed these. She didn’t want to stop playing with them. She used her creative skills and built things of her own with them. The best part is she gets critica…

Grading Homeschool

In my state it is not required that I keep grades. However, I am choosing to do I can see at a glance how she is doing. Since I chose Timberdoodle, they have a scheduler with check boxes for each assignment that you do. I plan on writing in the grades there and keeping them that way. I won’t show our daughter grades until 3rd grade.

My grading system:

Pre-K - 2 Grade: she will not see the grade
E: excellent; no extra work needed; 100-90%
S: satisfactory; give a little extra work; 89-80%
N: needs improvement; give a lot of extra work; 79-0%

3 - 5 Grade: she will only see letter grade
A: 100-90%
B: 89-80%
C: 79-70%
U: Unsatisfactory; 69-0%

6 - 12 Grade: she’ll now see the percentage grade
100-90%: A
89-80%: B
79-70%: C
69-60%: D
59-0%: F

For essays I found some great rubrics online.

Getting Started & Preschool Schedule

I noticed a lot of people on Facebook where asking about how to get started with homeschooling and what people do for their toddlers. In Texas, it’s very simple. You just send a letter or email to your child’s school letting them know you are withdrawing your child with the intent of homeschooling. Then begin homeschooling. Every state has different laws of what needs to be taught and what you need to do as far as testing. This website is very helpful for information by state. You’ll need to get a curriculum that you feel well be a good fit for your family. There are religious and secular (non-religious) curriculums. I have chosen Timberdoodle. They are a hands-on curriculum, offer both religious and non, you can customize your kits and they even have a scheduler to help you know what needs to get done each week.

Here is what we do for preschool. I did these myself; it’s not Timberdoodle.

Monday: books (she picks one and 1 about letters), game based on letters, break, 2 workbook pages…

Daily Schedule: Toddler

Our daughter is 2.5 now. We’ve been doing the same schedule for awhile now works great for us but might not work for everyone.

8-9: wake up, go potty, get dressed (she picks her own clothes), breakfast with milk or water, brush teeth
10-12: school time, play time
12-1: lunch with water or juice
1-6: story time, dance and singing, play time
6-7: dinner
7-8: play time
8-9: bath/shower time, brush teeth, story, bed

She doesn’t wake during the night or take naps because then she’ll stay up forever.

Skwids: Review

We had a foreign exchange college student come to our house one day and he was selling these books from Skwids. I do like these books. They have Ask Me About books, two books that are like dictionaries for kids, shapes, colors, letter and number books. We got 2 sticker books and posters. Haven’t used the sticker books or the posters yet. I want to laminate the posters first, they are about 16x24 inch.

Pros: they are big, sturdy, bright colors and fun pictures. They also have words in both English and Spanish.

Cons: price; we went with the least expensive package and they were still extremely expensive. We did get like 18 books, 2 sticker books and posters for the price but it was the most expensive thing we’ve bought for her school. They are in no way a curriculum but more of a supplemental tool.

Games I Use

For our daughter’s preschool I have done a lot through games.

I got flash cards and magnet letters/numbers. A simple cookie sheet makes the magnets stick so the child can match them to the cards.

For shapes/colors I got construction paper and cut out shapes. Them colored the clothes pins with markers to match. For white I had to cut out paper and glue it in. Also, my construction paper didn’t come with brown. This is also good for motor skills with using the clothes pin.

The beanbags I got from Amazon. I use the bucket so she can throw them in the bucket once she gets the bag I ask for. Our daughter loves to have me move the bucket so she has a moving target.

These popsicles are from Amazon. She can go by color or letters. Each popsicle has 2 letters one on the front and one on the back. Very well made in my opinion.

Egg shapes are from Amazon. Each egg is a different shape and two eggs are the same color so she can’t just go by color alone. I like these because they are really stu…

Big Preschool: Review

I absolutely love the Big Preschool Workbook by School Zone. It is a very comprehensive book of everything for a preschool student. It has really bright colors and fun pictures that keep my daughter interested. I do have to limit how many pages she can do a day otherwise she’d do the whole book. I tore out the pages and put them in a binder for easy access.

Wipe Clean: Review

We got a Wipe Clean book at Walmart. It has a lot of things for kids to work on with writing. The inside covers are blank so we use those to practice more than the actual pages so far but as she get older she’ll be able to fully use it. Plus sides are you can reuse it, last for long time because of how many different activities are in it and our daughter loves it. Cons: the letters are small so for a first time writer it can be hard at first and the expo marker they give you is awful. I suggest getting better ones. The pages can also bend really easily. I think they laminated the book in 3mil or less for it to be so bendy.

LeapFrog LeapStart: Review

Our daughter really enjoys the books for the LeapStart. I love that she can do them on her own or with us. It’s all done in a game format so the child has fun but is learning at the same time. Really love the sticker section in the back of each book. They give you matching stickers and you sticker each thing your child can do. You will need a computer to upload the books to the actual machine so it knows that to say with the books and the batteries seem to die really fast but that could be because she plays it everyday.
