If you are looking for the gold standard in supplemental workbooks, look no further than Kumon. We have become quite the "Kumon family," and the My First Book of Money: Counting Coins has been an absolute standout for our current school year. This workbook perfectly bridges the gap between abstract numbers and real-world application. It begins by reinforcing numbers 1–100—which aligns beautifully with our Math-U-See lessons—before diving into the identification and value of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. By the final pages, the student is "calculating" totals in illustrated cash registers, which is as adorable as it is educational!
To maximize the life of the book, we utilize our favorite "homeschool hack": placing each page in a sheet protector and using dry-erase markers. This allows for endless practice until the concept is mastered. The curriculum is expertly scaffolded, starting with very simple identification and growing progressively more challenging. Whether your child is homeschooled or in a traditional classroom, these books are world-class resources for providing that "little bit of extra help" that makes a world of difference in a child's confidence.
Our daughter’s interest in money actually sparked from our imaginative play sessions; she wanted to know exactly what to "pay" when we played restaurant or grocery store. Since starting this workbook, she has become remarkably proficient at identifying coins and handing over the correct change during our games. I cannot recommend the Kumon series enough for its durability, logical progression, and ability to turn a tricky concept like currency into a fun, daily achievement.
