Review: Math-U-See Alpha

We used Math-U-See Primer  last year and I found it to be a really great curriculum so we continued this year with Math-U-See Alpha . Math-U-See is a mastery based curriculum so once you’re child has mastered the concept then you move on. The blocks really do help because children get both the visual and auditory lessons. Sometimes the book does have problems from a previous lesson. If your child does need extra work on a certain concept then I suggest that you go to the Math-U-See website. They have worksheets you can print out for your child to practice with.  I do prefer workbooks that are in bright colors but these pages are in black and while. Even though the workbook is not in color they do suggest that you have the student color the squares the same color as the blocks provided which I have found to be very useful with memorization. You do not have a color the squares though if you do not want, too. The workbook has 5 to 6 pages for each lesson. Page 6 is pretty ea...

Review: Math-U-See Primer

Math was always my favorite subject in cool; well until I took chemistry. I use Timberdoodle curriculum and they had a placement test for math. Even though our daughter placed for Alpha, in their 1st grade kit, I choose to stick with  Math-U-See Primer . My reason for this is because I wanted to give her the extra confidence of know things and getting answers right. What I love is that this curriculum comes with the student booklet, teacher manual, instructional DVD and block manipulatives. A really nice thing is in the blocks there is a huge poster for teaching place values and how to read a clock. The booklet is in black and white but offers a lot of coloring for the student. The book says to color the squares the same color as the blocks; eg: 5 is light blue so then when they show 5 squares together you’re supposed to color them light blue. Now I don’t have my daughter do this. I let her color the squares whatever color she wants because I don’t want her thinkin...

Review: Mathematical Reasoning

I love math and wanted our daughter to gain the same passion for it I have. Mathematical Reasoning  Beginning 1  and  Beginning 2  have been an amazing curriculum for early math. Beginning 2 came with our Timberdoodle PreK Elite Kit and was a hit right off the bat. Our daughter loves the bright and colorful pages. She was doing so well with this book I went ahead and got Beginning 1 because I figured always getting the answers right would help build confidence and it did. The books get increasingly more challenging but then go back to an easier concept which is great reviewing and not getting burnt out. I love that they include riddles, number writing practice, drawing shapes and a ton more. However, I do wish they talked more shapes and colors. I’ve taught dark/light colors and a ton of shapes but we’re over halfway down with the book and it has only gone over triangle, square and rectangle.
