Finding the perfect introductory puzzle can be a challenge, but the Rubbabu 3D Animal Shape Sorter is a fantastic sensory-rich option that bridges the gap between simple play and early logic. This set features nine brightly colored animal pieces and a matching board, all crafted from natural rubber foam. While the pieces are incredibly squishy and durable—standing up perfectly to the curiosity of a baby—they are covered in a high-quality nylon flocking. This gives them a very specific, velvety "crushed velvet" texture. While that particular sensation isn't my personal favorite, it is an absolute hit with the kiddos, providing a soft, non-intimidating tactile experience.
What makes this sorter truly special is its versatility across different age groups. In our home, it serves as a "shared" activity for both our oldest and our youngest. While our 8-month-old focuses on the fine motor skill of grasping the pieces and fitting them into their silhouettes (she’s surprisingly good at it!), our oldest uses the puzzle to work on more advanced concepts like directional orientation. I’ll often set the "zoo" board up and ask her, "Which animal is west of the tree?" It’s a wonderful way to adapt a single toy for two different developmental stages.
The design of the animals is minimalist; they are silhouettes without faces, which encourages imaginative play as children project their own stories onto the characters. The board itself is just as soft and bendable as the pieces, making it a safe choice for little ones who might still be in a "throwing" phase—no hard edges to worry about here! It is a "quiet" toy that promotes focus and calm, whether the girls are taking turns or "big sis" is stepping in to help "lil sis" find the right spot for the elephant.
We have plenty of traditional wooden puzzles in our collection, and while those are great, the Rubbabu adds a unique sensory dimension that they just can't match. It’s an eco-friendly, antimicrobial, and overall very "sweet" first puzzle that grows with your children. If you’re looking for a soft, durable, and educational toy that can be used in multiple ways, this is a "must-have" for your early learning shelf—provided you don't mind the feel of velvet!
